Entries and J’s Picks for Matt Winn Stakes (G3) at Churchill Downs on May 23

Matt Winn is part of Run for the Roses point races for the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs on September 5. The winner of the Matt Winn will receive 50 qualifying points, with the next three finishers getting 20-10-5 points.

Race 10. Matt Winn Stakes (G3). For three-year-old at 1 1/16 miles on the dirt. Purse $150,000.

Mystic Guide broke his maiden by five lengths at Fair Grounds on March 21. He beat a soft field in his victory. He needs to have more experience to be competitive against the top horse he faces today. He should finish off the board.

Pneumatic has won both of his starts. His wins were a maiden and allowance optional claiming wins at Oaklawn. He has enough speed to find a nice secure place on the rail behind the leaders. He will need racing luck as his makes a move around the turn for home to finish in the top three.

Informative finished seventh in the Gotham Stakes (G3). He broke his maiden by a neck at Aqueduct. He is out classed in this field. He should not be a factor at the wire. 

Celtic Striker has two win to his credit. He should be near the front for first half-mile then start to fall back towards the rear of the field. He should not be a factor at the wire. 

Flap Jack showed early speed in the Oaklawn Stakes then faded to finish 12th. His sixth-place finish in the Gotham was against a softer field than today. He should not be a factor at the wire. 

Ny Traffic finished second in the Louisiana Derby (G2). He ran third in the second division of the Risen Star Stakes (G2). He has early speed a should be able to find a clean running room. He should be able to finish in the top four.

Necker Island finished fifth in both the Swale Stakes (G3) and the Gotham Stakes (G3). He also was able to hold on to capture a fourth-place finish in the Unbridled Stakes. He should not be a factor at the wire. 

Crypto Cash finished for sixth in the first division of the Arkansas Derby (G1). The shorter distance should improve his chances. If there is a solid pace he will be passing tired horses down the stretch. He should be able, if pace is honest, finished in top six.

Shake Some Action finished sixth in the Louisiana Derby. He has shown little speed in his prior races. He will need a honest pace to have a chance of finding a spot on the board.

Maxfield has 2 wins from 2 starts. He won the Breeders’ Futurity (G1) at Keeneland the Breeders’ Futurity (G1) at Keeneland last October. He is coming off an extended long layoff into a Derby prep race. He posted a bullet workout on May 10. He showed enough talent to pick him to finish in the top three.

Attachment Rate is still learning how to switch leads. He ran second in the Unbridled Stakes at Gulfstream Park. He likes to pass tired horses down the stretch. If he switches leads down the stretch he should be able to finish in top five. 

Major Fed record is 4: 1-1-1. He Fed closed from last in the Louisiana Derby to finish fourth. He will need a honest pass to in order for him to make up significant ground. He needs to sitting close to the leaders to have a chance in this large field. He should be asked for some speed and use his kick to finish in top four.
