MCKINZIE RETAINS TOP SPOT IN BREEDERS’ CUP CLASSIC RANKINGS;

DESPITE LOSS IN AWESOME AGAIN, MCKINZIE RETAINS TOP SPOT IN BREEDERS’ CUP CLASSIC RANKINGS; CODE OF HONOR AND VINO ROSSO CLAIM NEXT TWO POSITIONS 

LEXINGTON, Ky(Oct. 2, 2019) – Mike Pegram, Karl Watson and Paul Weitman’s 4-year-old McKinzie, who was upset by Mongolian Stables’ Mongolian Groom in Saturday’s Awesome Again Stakes (G1) at Santa Anita Park, remains in first place in the latest Breeders’ Cup Classic Rankings, but his lead is just 15 total votes ahead of Jockey Club Gold Cup (G1) winner Code of Honor. Repole Stable and St. Elias Stable’s 4-year-old Vino Rosso, who was placed second in the Gold Cup following interference with Code of Honor in a thrilling stretch drive, is now ranked third.

McKinzie (255 votes), trained by Bob Baffert, has led the Breeders’ Cup Classic Rankings for 17 consecutive weeks. Code of Honor (240 votes), owned by William S. Farish and trained by Shug McGaughey, retains the second spot in the rankings. Vino Rosso (210) votes, rose from sixth to third place this week.

Claiborne Farm and Adele Dilschneider’s 5-year-old mare Elate (146 votes) also was a big mover this week. Trained by Bill Mott, Elate, winner of the Fleur de Lis (G2) at Churchill Downs, rose from seventh to fourth place after entering the Top 10 for the first time last week.

China Horse Club International, WinStar Farm and Head of Plains Partners’ 5-year-old Yoshida (JPN) (138 votes), third in the Woodward, drops one spot to fifth place, and is followed by TVG Pacific Classic (G1) winner Higher Power (127 votes), third in the Awesome Again, who slips to sixth place for Hronis Racing and trainer John Sadler.

The 4-year-old Mongolian Groom (71 votes) led the Awesome Again from gate to wire under jockey Abel Cedlillo at 25-1. Trained by  Enebish Ganbat, Mongolian Groom enters the Classic Rankings for the first time, settling in at No. 7. Centennial Farm’s 6-year-old Preservationist (69 votes), fourth in the Jockey Club Gold Cup, drops from third to eighth place this week.

Gary and Mary West’s TVG.com Haskell Invitational (G1) winner Maximum Security (48 votes) is now in ninth place, flipping positions with Juddmonte Farms 3-year-old Tacitus (35 votes), who finished third in the Jockey Club Gold Cup, and is now in 10th place.

The Breeders’ Cup  Classic Rankings, a weekly rating of the top 10 horses in contention for the $6 million Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1) at Santa Anita Park, Nov. 2, are determined by a panel of leading Thoroughbred racing media, horseplayers and members of the Breeders’ Cup Racing Directors/Secretaries Panel. Rankings are announced each week through Oct. 15 and can be found on the Breeders’ Cup website along with the list of voting members.

In the Breeders’ Cup Classic Rankings, each voter ranks horses by assigning their allotted votes on a 10-9-8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1 system in descending order.

Each NBC Sports Breeders’ Cup Challenge Series Win and You’re In – Presented by America’s Best Racing telecast will include the Breeders’ Cup Classic Rankings with commentary from the on-air talent.

The 2019 Breeders’ Cup Classic, which will be run at 1 ¼ miles on the main track at Santa Anita, will be televised live and in prime time on NBC. Thirteen winners of the Classic have been voted Horse of the Year.
