Mozu Ascot found a seam between Aerolithe and favorite Suave Richard in deep stretch and rallied to an upset victory in the Yasuda Kinen Grade 1 at one-mile on June 3 at Tokyo Racecourse. With Christophe Lemaire aboard, Mozu Ascot scored his first Grade 1 win. The Yasuda Kinen is a “Win and You’re In” guaranteed entry to the Breeders’ Cup Mile (G1) at Churchill Downs in November. His win was over Japan’s most successful milers and middle-distance Grade 1 winner Suave Richard. Mozu Ascot raced toward the back of the field down the backside, was blocked and bumped entering the final turn and had to wait for running room as the field turned for the wire. Aerolithe emerged with the lead 100 meters out, with Suave Richard to his outside, but Lemaire found the spot between them for Mozu Ascot and had Mozu Ascot a neck in front at the wire. Aerolithe ran second, three-quarters of a length ahead of Suave Richard. Mozu Ascot career statistics are 11 starts with 5 wins and 3 seconds with earnings of $2,012,745. He is trained by Yoshito Yahagi and his owner is Capital System Co. Ltd.
