Omaha Beach wins the Arkansas Derby

Omaha Beach got the jump on Improbable in the backstretch under, then held dueled off Improbable down the lane to win Saturday’s $1-million, Grade I Arkansas Derby at Oaklawn Park in Hot Springs, Ark., by one length as the 8-5 favorite.

Improbable, the second choice in the wagering in the field 11 3-year-olds, finished 5 3/4 lengths clear of Country House, the third-place finisher. Laughing Fox finished fourth. Galilean, Long Range Toddy, Jersey Agenda, Tikhvin, Gray Attempt, Six Shooter and One Flew South completed the order of finish.

Omaha Beach time for the 1 1/8 mile race on a sloppy racetrack was 1:49.91.

Omaha Beach assured himself a spot in the starting gate in the Kentucky Derby by earning 100 points, Improbable earned 40 points for second giving him a total of 65 and putting him 11th. Country House earned 20 points for third and now has 50, putting him at No. 17 after the final points race of the season.

Improbable and Omaha Beach broke well but they were behind One Flew South who set the early pace. After an opening quarter mile, Omaha Beach moved to the outside, and they made a strong move to the front in the run down the backstretch.  Improbable up from sixth position and then battled Omaha Beach to the wire. Omaha Beach was able to secure the win by a length.
