In just five years, the Penn Mile, to be run June 2, has established itself as one of the most important turf races for three-year-olds in the country. In 2014, Bobby’s Kitten won the Penn Mile and went on to win the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint. Two years later, Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf winner Catch a Glimpse captured the Penn Mile.
The Penn Mile anchors a stakes-laden race card offering $1.3 million in purses. The stakes races for June 2 at Penn national includes the $200,000 Penn Oaks, a mile turf race for three-year-old fillies; the $200,000 Pennsylvania Governor’s Cup, a five-furlong turf sprint for three-year-olds and up; and the $100,000 Penn Ladies Dash, a five-furlong turf sprint for fillies and mares three-years-old and up.
Additionally, there are three $100,000 stakes races for Pennsylvania-bred on the card: The Lyphard Stakes, a 1 1/16-mile turf race for fillies and mares three-years-old and up, the Danzig Stakes, a six-furlong dirt sprint for three-year-olds; and the New Start Stakes, a six-furlong dirt sprint for three-year-old fillies.
The Penn Mile drew eight entries including Treadway Racing Stable’s Maraud, trained by Todd Pletcher, a winner of four of seven career starts on the grass, including the Graded 2 American Turf on Kentucky Derby Day at Churchill Downs and the Grade 3 Palm Beach this past March at Gulfstream Park. Therapist trained by Christopher Clement, a winner of four of five career starts with career earnings of $243,725. His only lost was to Maraud by 3 lengths on March 3 in Palm Beach Stakes at Gulfstream at 1 1/16 miles.

The Penn Ladies Dash drew a field of 12 including Morticia, trained by George “Rusty” Arnold, who finished just a head behind Triple Chelsea in the Unbridled Sidney. The four-year-old won six of eight starts last year, including five scores in stakes races. In 2018, she has started 3 times. In her last race, Unbridled Stakes on May 12 at Churchill Downs she ran second beaten a head by Triple Chelsea. The Penn Ladies Dash is for fillies and mares three- year-old and up at five furlongs on the turf. Purse $100,000.

The Penn Mile and Pennsylvania Governor’s Cup are both part of the fourth Penn Racing Gaming Challenge, which ties 20 unrestricted stakes races across seven days throughout the year and offers bonuses, free entries and other prizes to the top owners, trainers and jockeys at Hollywood Casino at Penn National, Hollywood Casino at Charles Town Races, Hollywood Gaming at Mahoning Valley Race Course, Sam Houston Race Park and Zia Park.
The Pennsylvania Governor’s Cup and the Penn Ladies Dash are both Match Series races. The 25-race series offers $2.9 million in purses with $490,000 in additional bonuses for owners, trainers, breeders and certifiers.
