Review of Hopeful Stakes, Grade I, at Saratoga on September 3

Race 10. Hopeful Stakes, Grade I. For two-year-old at 7 furlongs on dirt. Purse: $350,000.

The Hopeful Stakes is one of the oldest and most prestigious races for 2-year-olds, the Hopeful had its inaugural edition in 1904, when it was won by the filly Tanya. The following year she went on to win the Belmont Stakes, the first of more than a dozen Hopeful winners who went on to triumph in the 1 ½-mile “Test of the Champion.” The Hopeful was first contested at six furlongs; at 6 ½ furlongs from 1925-93, and at seven furlongs thereafter. The only dead heat in the Hopeful came in 2000, when Yonaguska and City Zip hit the wire together. Sporting Chance won the 2017 Sporting Chance.

Mucho enters after a strong performance broking his maiden by 9 3/4 lengths on June 10 at Belmont Park.

Dream Maker who enters off a three length win on June 7 at Churchill Downs.

Sombeyay broke his maiden by 6 1/4 lengths on April 27 at Gulfstream Park. He finished in the $150,000 Tremont on June 8 at Belmont Park. He won the Grade 3 Sanford on July 21 at Saratoga.

Mind Control broke his maiden by three lengths on August 12 at Monmouth Park.

Derby Date is the lone maiden in the field will look to win his first race in his third start at Saratoga.

Nitrous debuted at Churchill Downs as a heavy favorite but was beaten by a neck behind Strike Silver, who came back to nearly win the Sanford in his next start. Nitrous returned to win his second start, which came at Saratoga in a maiden special weight on Opening Day.

Thatwouldbegreat broke his maiden last time out by over 3 lengths in a maiden special weight at Laurel.

Backtohisroots was claimed out of his last race for $50,000.
