Review of Personal Ensign Stakes, Grade I, at Saratoga on August 25

Race 7. Personal Ensign Stakes, Grade I. For three-year-old and up fillies and mares at 1 18 miles on dirt. Purse $700,000.

The Personal Ensign is a race for 3-years-old and up fillies and mares. This year’s edition is part of the Breeders’ Cup Challenge series, the winner will qualify for the Breeders’ Cup Ladies Classic in November.

The latest prize Abel Tasman is looking to add to her stakes collection on August

25, when the 2017 champion 3-year-old filly takes on five challengers in the $700,000 Personal Ensign Stakes (G1) at Saratoga Race Course.

 

This race appears to be a match race between Abel Tasman and Elate.

Abel Tasman is a four-time Grade I winner. She was able to out run Elate in the Coaching Club American Oaks. She easily won by 7 1/2 lengths the Grade I Ogden Phipps Stakes at Belmont Park.

 

Elate is a two-time graded stakes winner at 1 1/4 miles and should have no trouble with the distance. She likes performing at Saratoga. She won the Grade I Alabama Stakes at Saratoga last summer. She recently won the Grade 2 Delaware Handicap.

 

The race should start down the back stretch between the two fillies. They should hook-up around the final turn. Elate should be able to out kick Abel Tasman down the lane.

 

Multiple graded stakes winner Farrell is a threat to knock off the top two after holding on by a neck to beat Wow Cat in the July 29 Shuvee Stakes (Grade III) at Saratoga.
