Winx goes for 33rd Consecutive Victory Against Eight

Winx will take on eight rivals from the outside post Saturday in Randwick Racecourse’s Queen Elizabeth Stakes (G1).

Trained by Chris Waller, Winx will have jockey Hugh Bowman in the irons as she looks for a third straight victory in the Queen Elizabeth. With another victory , her earnings will exceed $26 million AUS in earnings for her 43 race career.

“We prefer to be wider than in close to eliminate the problems you might get early in a race, and Hugh’s always been happy to be out of trouble,” co-owner Peter Tighe told reporters at the draw.

Among the Queen Elizabeth competition is familiar rivals Happy Clapper and Hartnell, who have given the 8-year-old daughter of Street Cry some close calls during her streak. The Japan-based Kluger and He’s Eminent, formerly based in Europe, are getting their first matchups with the champ.

Winx should go into the $4 million finale a heavy favorite, already listed at $1.06 by bookmakers at the time of the draw.

“I just want to get to Saturday morning, and I’ve done my job getting her there safely,” Waller told reporters. “We’ve chosen to have an extra preparation and we want go out with a fairytale ending.”

Connections said they haven’t been tempted to race Winx on past Saturday. They also officially quashed any rumors of an overseas trip following the Queen Elizabeth. Winx’s breeding plans have not been decided but remain a popular topic in Australia.
